October 25th

The 5th round of the Yorkshire Points Winter Cyclo Cross series, promoted by Condor Road Club, took place at Wellholme Park, Brighouse on Sunday.  Race organiser John Ginley had managed to create an extremely tough course with steep climbs & technical descents.

Luca Longo (Huddersfield Star Wheelers) had his first ever win in the Under 8s race chased all the way by club mate Alex Bailey, Lucy Sears (Sowerby Bros RT) won the Under 8 Girls race.  Holme Valley Wheeler Tom Ford was 2nd in the Under 10s race, 17 seconds behind George Southby (East Bradford CC).  Jenson Young (Pedalsport CC) continued his winning streak in the Under 12s, Mason Hollyman (Kirklees Cycling Academy) was 3rd & Jack Ford (Holme Valley Wheelers) 4th.

It was a battle of the Young brothers in the Veterans race with Chris (Wheelbase) & Mike (Pedalsport CC) leading the way.  Chris had the advantage by being the only rider capable of riding the steepest hill but Mike was stronger on the descents.  The Judges couldn't seperate them as they crossed the line to finish joint first place.  Best out of the local riders was former Holme Valley Wheeler Richard Binks (Clay Cross RT) in 4th place.  Graham Piccavey (Huddersfield Star Wheelers) had a strong result in 21st out of 86 competitors.

David Beachill (Huddersfield RC) was 26th in the Seniors race won by Joe Moses (Paul Milnes RT) by over a minute and a half from Dieter Droger (Team CF).

Holme Valley Wheeler Lee Brown had a successful evening's racing at Manchester Velodrome in the Friday Night Track League last week.  Riding in Group 4, Brown won the 1km & 20 lap Scratch races.  Hartshead youngster Abby Mae Parkinson (RST Racing Team) won the Points, Unknown Distance & 1km Scratch race in Group 1.

There was plenty of hill climb action this weekend as Holme Valley Wheeler's promoted their event up Holme Moss on Saturday morning & Huddersfield Star Wheelers held their event at Jackson Bridge in the afternoon.  Conditions in the morning were far from ideal with low cloud at the summit & a headwind making it tough going.  Former National Champion Matt Clinton (Mike Vaughan Cycles) was way ahead of the opposition with a spectacular time of 6min 46sec for the 1.3 mile climb, best of the rest was Dan Evans (Rhos on Sea CC) in 7min 11.8sec, with Lee Baldwin (Buxton CC) 3rd in 7min 20.1sec.  Richard Anderson (VS Cycles) was fastest of the local riders in 6th place in a time of 8min 20.4sec just 1 second ahead of Star Wheeler's Andy Pearson.

Clinton dominated the other 37 riders on the climb to Tinker's Monument in the afternoon in 4min 17.2sec nearly 20 seconds faster than Dan Evans, once again in 2nd place with 4min 35.7sec.  Junior Joshua Ferguson (Coveryourcar.co.uk) produced a great ride for 3rd place in 4min 49.3sec.  Andy Pearson repeated his 7th place from the morning & scraped under the 5 minute barrier by 0.2 seconds.  Lewis Hirst (Kirklees Cycling Academy) was 2nd in the British Schools event in 7min 22.9sec behind David Pullan (East Bradford CC) in 6min 17.7sec.

There was another victory for RST RT-Trigon in the Norton Wheelers Cyclo Cross event at Graves Park, Sheffield.  Gareth Hewitt won the Senior/Women/Junior/Veterans race from Tom Randall (Wakefield Tri) in 2nd & Robin Bradbury (Aire Valley RT) in 3rd.  Huddersfield Road Club's David Beachill was 10th & Graham Piccavey (Huddersfield Star Wheelers) was 15th.

Tuesday October 4th

The 4th round of the Yorkshire Points Winter Cyclo Cross series took place at Temple Newsam, Leeds on Sunday.  Conditions could not have been more different to the 2010 event which took place in a mud bath, riders were more likely to get a sun tan this year.

In the Youth race Amira Mellor (Holme Valley Wheelers) was first girl across the line in the race won by Billy Harding (Paul Milnes RT).  Huddersfield Star Wheeler's Luca Longo was 2nd in the Under 8s race, just pipped by Nathan Fortune (Pedalsport CC).  Kirklees Cycling Academy riders Henry Hollyman & Adam Fortune were 2nd & 3rd in the Under 10s behind Ava Oxley (Wakefield Tri).  Mason Hollyman matched his younger brother's result in the Under 12s, just losing out to Jenson Young (Pedalsport CC)

105 riders took to the start line in Veterans race & once again Chris Young (Wheelbase) dominated the race with Richard Binks (Holme Valley Wheelers) in an impressive 5th place. Graham Piccavey (Huddersfield Star Wheelers) was 28th & club mate Giles Bailey 54th.  Huddersfield Road Club's Tim Beachill was 44th.

Jack Clarkson (Pedalsport CC) won the Seniors race just 2 seconds ahead of Tom Last (Sigma Sport Specialized), David Beachill (Huddersfield RC) was 34th & Ivan Boyes (Huddersfield Star Wheelers) was 43rd.

Local youth riders were in action once again in the National Youth Madison Championships at Manchester Velodrome last weekend.  The pairing of Chris Lawless (Maxgear RT) & Jacob Ragan (Team Wallis CHH RT) won the 60 lap race, an event where riders relay each other into the race whilst contesting sprints for points every 20 laps to decide the winner.  Mirfield's Jake Womersley (Aire Valley RT) was 2nd with his team mate Oliver Wood & former Holme Valley Wheeler Jacob Scott (Planet X) was 3rd with his partner Jake Kelly (Tm Royal London 360 IoM).
