National Trophy Derby November 26th

There were thrills & spills for the Huddersfield riders in the National Trophy Cyclo Cross at the Moorways Centre in Derby on Sunday.

Abby Mae Parkinson (RST Racing Team-Trigon) took her first ever Cyclo Cross victory in the Under 16 Girls race, leading from start to finish.  Holme Valley Wheeler's Amira Mellor was 7th & now lies 3rd in the overall standings with Parkinson moving up to 6th place.

Louise Robinson continued her highly successful comeback by winning the Womens race by just 12 seconds from Hannah Payton (Kinesis Morvelo Project) in 2nd & Robinson's Stourbridge CC club mate Isla Rowntree 28 seconds back in 3rd place.

Jake Womersley (Aire Valley RT) was having one of his best rides of the 2011 season but tangled with Adam Martin (Cestria Cycles RT) on the last lap, both riders crashed & Womersley finished the race in 12th place.  Hugo Robinson (X RT/Elmy Cycles) took the victory.

Another rider having no luck was former Holme Valley Wheeler Richard Binks (Clay Cross RT) who crashed out of the Veterans race.

The penultimate round of the National Trophy takes place at Peel Park, Bradford on Sunday 11th December. 

Holme Valley Wheelers Jack Ford & Jim Brown were 1st & 2nd in the Under 12s race at the Sheffield Stars Cyclo Cross event on Sunday, Alex Bailey (Huddersfield Star Wheelers) was fastest Under 8.  Joe Williams (Holme Valley Wheelers) was 5th the Youth race, won by Levi Moody (Pedalsport CC).

Former Holme Valley riders Gabriel Cullaigh (RST Racing Team-Trigon) & Leon Gledhill (Planet X) had a good night at the Premier Division Track League last Tuesday night at Manchester Velodrome.  Cullaigh's best result was 2nd in the 50 lap Points race & Gledhill was 3rd in the Devil race.

Cullaigh's team mate Josh Cutler, who took up cycling relatively recently through Kirklees Cycling Academy, won 2 races at the First Division Track League on Friday night.  Cutler, racing in Group 3, won the Points & Unknown Distance races & has been promoted to Group 4 for this week's event.

Bingley Cyclo Cross 20th Nov

The 7th Round of the Yorkshire Points Cyclo Cross Winter series took place at a rather foggy & damp Myrtle Park, Bingley on Sunday.  Once again the Huddersfield Star Wheelers youngsters were to the fore in the Under 8s race with Alex Bailey taking the win & club mate Luca Longo in 2nd place, Hannah Whitworth (Huddersfield RC) was fastest Girl.  Kirklees Cycling Academy's Henry Hollyman won the Under 10s race & brother Mason was 3rd in the Under 12s behind Pedalsport duo Jenson Young & Matt Taylor.

In the Veteran/Womens race former Holme Valley Wheeler Richard Binks (Clay Cross RT) was in 5th place, the race was won by Chris Young (Wheelbase) who has proved unbeatable this year in Yorkshire Points events.  Mirfield's Louise Robinson was an impressive 10th place overall.  Graham Piccavey (Huddersfield Star Wheelers) was 22nd.

The Senior/Juniors race was won by Rob Watson (Paul Milnes RT) with Endura professional Ian Wilkinson in 2nd.  Watson was able to keep Wilkinson at bay thanks to his bunny hopping skills, leaping over a huge concrete step every lap whilst all other riders had to dismount. 

Jake Womersley (Aire Valley RT) was 5th place & 2nd Junior rider, an impressive result for the Mirfield youngster as he had raced with the Future Stars at the Revolution track meeting at Manchester Velodrome the previous evening.

Joining Womersley at Manchester were former Holme Valley Wheeler Jacob Scott (Planet X) & Hartshead youngster Abby Mae Parkinson (RST Racing Team) all riding for the Chep UK team along with the rest of the Yorkshire Youth Squad. 

Parkinson had a great night's racing with 2nd place in the Elimination race, Scott took two 3rd places in the Elimination & Points races.

Another former Holme Valley rider & Olympic Team Pursuit Champion & multiple World Champion Ed Clancy took victory in the 1km Madison Time Trial with Rapha Condor Sharp team mate Andy Tennant in a spectatcular time of 55.351 seconds.

The highlight of the night for the 4000 spectators was an appearance from World Road Champion & Tour De France Green Jersey winner Mark Cavendish guest riding for the Howies team.  Cavendish won the final event of the night the 15km Scratch race.

Grange Moor Mudfest Nov 13th

Yorkshire Cycling Federation's Cyclo Cross took place at Grange Moor Motor Cross circuit on Sunday.  Thick mud on the whole course made it really tough for all the riders and there were plenty of broken bikes & sore legs by the end of the afternoon.  It was a clean sweep of the podium positions for Huddersfield Star Wheelers in the Under 8s race.  Luca Longo took his 2nd win of the season followed home by clubmates Dylan Boyes & Alex Bailey.

Kirklees Cycling Academy siblings Henry & Mason Hollyman were also at the sharp end of their races. Mason won the Under 12s race & Henry was 2nd to Ava Oxley (Wakefield Junior Tri) in the Under 10s, Adam Bailey (Huddersfield Star Wheelers) was 7th.

The Youth race was won by Levi Moody (Pedalsport CC) despite breaking his chain on the last lap & having to run to the finish, Holme Valley Wheeler Joe Williams was 7th.

James Sharp won the Senior/Junior/Women/Veteran race, John Hick (Holme Valley Wheelers) was best of the local riders in 4th place.

Conditions couldn't have been more different for the latest round of the National Trophy Cyclo Cross event in Southampton which took place in bright sunshine.  Amira Mellor (Holme Valley Wheelers) continued her good form with 4th place in the Under 16 Girls race just 1 second ahead of  Harsthead youngster Abby Parkinson (RST Racing Team-Trigon), the race was won by Jessica Wilkinson (Birkenhead North End).  Mellor is 3rd place overall in the series after 3 events.

The 7th Round of the Yorkshire Points Cyclo Cross series is at Myrtle Park Bingley this Sunday, the Youth race starts off proceedings at 11am.

Inter Area Cyclo Cross Champs Nov 6th

Holme Valley Wheeler Amira Mellor was 3rd girl in the Youths race at the Inter Area Cyclo Cross Championships at Milton Keynes Bowl.  Mellor who has recently been selected for the British Cycling Mountain Bike Talent Team helped her Yorkshire A team to 4th place in the event which was won by the West Midlands squad.

The Yorkshire A team won the Veterans prize with Chris Young winning the race & team mates Noel Clough, Matt Denby & Mike Young in 3rd, 4th & 10th respectively.  Former Holme Valley Wheeler Richard Binks was unlucky not to have been selected in the A team as competition for places is fierce but he managed 12th place for the Yorkshire B team who were in 7th place overall.


The next event in the Yorkshire Cyclo Cross season takes place this Sunday at Grange Moor Motor Cross Track.  The Youth race starts at 11am, Under 12s at 11.45am & Senior/Junior/Women/Veterans at 1pm

Former Holme Valley Wheelers Gabriel Cullaigh & Leon Gledhill were in track action last week at Manchester Velodrome.  Gledhill (Planet X) racing in the Premier Division last Tuesday was 3rd in the Group 1 40 lap Scratch Race & he repeated this result in the 50 lap Points race.

Cullaigh (RST Racing) riding in the top group in the First Division last Friday won the 20 lap Points race, the Course Des Primes & the Unknown Distance race.

Star Wheelers Go Cross October 30th

Huddersfield Star Wheelers held their Winter Cyclo Cross event, including the Under 12s Regional Championships, at Newsome High School on Sunday.  As for most of this years events the weather was kind to the riders & spectators, however overnight rain & a heavy dew made the course very slippery & there were plenty of thrills & spills. 


There was success for Huddersfield clubs in the Under 8s with Hannah Whitworth (Huddersfield Road Club) winning the girls race & Alex Bailey (Huddersfield Star Wheelers) the boys race with club mates Luca Longo & Dylan Boyes in 2nd & 4th places.  Ava Oxley (Wakefield Junior Tri) won the Under 10s race to take the girls prize, Kirklees Cycling Academy rider Henry Hollyman was 2nd & recieved the boys trophy.  Pedalsport youngster Jenson Young was out in front from the whistle in the Under 12s race, Mason Hollyman (Kirklees Cycling Academy) was 2nd across the line.


Levi Moody (Pedalsport CC) dominated the Youth race finishing over 3.5 minutes ahead of Tom Humphrey (Wakefield Junior Tri).


Top British based pro rider Ian Wilkinson (Endura RT) made a surprise appearance in the Senior/Women/Veteran/Juniors race in the afternoon.  After 45 minutes of racing over a tough technical course Wilkinson took the win over 1 minute ahead of former Holme Valley Wheeler Richard Binks (Clay Cross RT), John Hick (Holme Valley Wheelers) completed the podium positions.

The National Trophy Cyclo Cross series moved to Leicester for the 2nd round.  Jake Womersley had a strong 5th place in the Junior race, won by Alex Welburn (Cycle Shack/Forme Coaching).  Amira Mellor (Holme Valley Wheelers) & Abby Mae Parkinson (RST Racing Team) were 3rd & 4th in the Under 16 Girls race, won by Grace Garner (Leicestershire RC)

Top Huddersfield pro Tom Murray & his Rouleur team top the standings after round one of the 2011 Revolution at Manchester Velodrome on Saturday.  Murray's best result of the night was 3rd in the 10km Scratch race won by his team mate Sam Harrison.  Rouleur have a 14 point lead on the Uk Youth team going into round 2 on November 19th.  Former Holme Valley Wheeler Jacob Scott riding for the Chep UK team took a great win in the Future Stars Scratch race.


Gabriel Cullaigh (RST Racing Team), another rider who came through the Holme Valley Wheelers youth team, won 3 events at the Friday Night Track League at Manchester Velodrome last week.  Riding in group 3, Cullaigh was victorious in the Scratch, Points & Course Des Primes & has been promoted to the top Group for this Friday's event.

The National Hill Climb took place on Sunday up Long Hill near Whaley Bridge, Derbyshire.  Former professional mountain biker Gunner Gronlund (RST Racing Team) was fastest with a time of 12min 49sec, winner of the recent Huddersfield Star Wheelers event & former National Champion Matt Clinton (Mike Vaughan Cycles) was 3rd in 12min 57.5sec.  Carl Saint (Yorkshire RC) was best of the local riders in 36th place taking 14min 26.9sec to reach the summit, Andy Pearson (Huddersfield Star Wheelers) was 66th in 15min 21.3sec & Huddersfield Road Club's Paul Brierley was 98th in 16min 25.5sec.
